    Royal Potatoes Harvested 29/4/11

With today being the royal wedding day I decided to harvest some Swift potatoes that had been growing in the greenhouse during the winter. The crop is not huge but they have been harvested a bit too soon and there were plenty more tubers forming which would have been great in a few weeks time.

Anyway here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL9xYyJ-U7M

I also have a few photos of them just waiting to be washed a devoured.

Whats wrong with have a right royal furtle, Iain, then you could have left the rest to develop. LIKE YOU TELL US! LOL
I had a furtle in a bath with Premier growing down the lottie and felt quite a good number of small one still attached.
I have some Swift too in the greenhouse that look ready to flower, also red duke of yorks which have romped upwards with the warm weather.
The early tatties, Premier and Dunluce, in the ground are just showing, but with no rain for several weeks i suspect they will be slow developing again.

I did furtle and I felt a couple of big spuds so I thought lets go for it. Another 2 weeks and it would have been a fair crop from that little bag but today just seemed like the right day to do it. I have never harvested potatoes as early.

In the first video, you showed a simple fleece cover over the planter bag to protect them from frost. Was that the only protection they had or did you heat the greenhouse or take them indoors?

The ones in the green potato planter bag had the fleece on but I watered them and managed to kill them when the frost arrived!!!

These ones were the forgotten about rubbish that I just threw to the side and forgot about really. The bubble wrap only went on once I realised that they were growing again and luckily we were so busy that I did not water these ones. The greenhouse has no heating and the potatoes were never outside of the greenhouse. I also left a few tubers in some half tonne bags of peat and even they have managed to survive and were growing again.
